Fermez la Bush
Aug. 18th, 2004 09:17 amThe above was a bumper sticker spotted last night. Complete with a crossed-out W. *snickersnicker*
Saw The Corporation: a Canadian documentary that looks at the growth and current predominance of this force worldwide. I was not too surprised by some of the revelations...but two portions touched me deeply. First, the story of Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface carpet manufacturers, and how he came to see himself as a "plunderer". Second, the struggle of Bolivians in Cochabamba to preserve access to water as a public resource--in the face of repression and even death. "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido..." that old slogan breathes for me again.
* * * * *
And on a laugh-to-keep-from-wincing note:
Volume 15 of the translated InuYasha manga has this exchange between Kagome and her present-day friends, who have just realized that she's "seeing" someone they don't know.
Friends: "C'mon, Kagome! Spill!" "What's this guy like?"
Kagome: "Like an infant. He's violent. He's selfish. He has no self-control."
Friends [shocked thought-bubble]: He's an *American*?!
Ha-ha funny, but ouch funny too.
