His works shaped my childhood. He knew how to write pathos in a way that was accessible to kids and adults alike; how to create flawed, sympathetic heroes and lovable side characters (here's looking at you, Gurgi and Fflewddur Fflam). (He knew how to write great fantasy about cats, too.)
Sometimes, in later years, I felt his plots and characters fell into patterns--but there was always something to redeem each story.
