sarasusa: (sai from HnG artbook)
Author’s Note: My attempt to write a fic for a request by [livejournal.com profile] ferretgirl_1124 here on fic_on_demand--it didn't wind up satisfying the terms of the request, alas.
Title: Secret Bases
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Rating: K+ for mild teen angst.
Pairings: a bit o' Kyou/Tohru here, a bit o' Yuki/Tohru there…
Summary: Set somewhere during manga vol. 9 (after the end of term, just before the momentous visit to the summer home).
Disclaimer: Heigh-ho, nobody home, Furuba copyright have I none, still will I be merry...

sun-glow through flapping sheets )

This feels pretty rough—I'm passing the hat for suggested revisions. I find Yuki hard to write, partly because—as of manga vol. 12—Takaya's still withholding key information on what makes him tick.

In other news, I'd like to tout the virtues of

del.icio.us!

What is it?
--An online location for your bookmarked websites, so you can retrieve them from any Internet connection
--A flexible system for organizing bookmarks (you assign subject tags--then, if you click on one of the tag labels, it will retrieve all the sites with that tag).
--A way to share your favorite sites with others!

[livejournal.com profile] lislemck posted about it some time back, but I just got around to setting up my own account (take a look!). And boy, is it fun--not to mention a lot easier to deal with than the Internet Explorer favorites-folder system.
sarasusa: (pwned by Mungo)
Because I got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] bakashoujiki...

Tagging five friends? Hmmm...

Nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] cheeky_duckie:

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now (even if we don't speak often), please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want--good or bad--BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you!

Another two drabbles (Fruits Basket and Here is Greenwood) and a personal statement.

Title: Through the Mantilla
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Rating: K+
Pairings/warning: slight one-sided Hana-chan/Tohru. (Hence, a hint of shoujo-ai.)

Disclaimer: Hail, all hail Natsuki Takaya. This fic is merely a tribute.

Each evening Saki undoes her braids )

Fandom: Here is Greenwood/Koko wa Greenwood
Disclaimer: Yay, Yukie Nasu! Boo, anyone who tries to steal her thunder!
Title: Debt
Rating: K
Category: Introspecti-fic.
Characters/Pairings: Mitsuru and Shinobu
Summary: Canonical metaphor--Shinobu can't balance his checkbook, and it's all Mitsuru's fault. 100-word drabble.
Warnings/Spoilers: Especially refers to one of their interactions in vol. 5. (I've only read through vol. 7.)

Yesterday, I was part of an assembly in a public elementary school where the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. I didn't feel clear (Quakerese for being spiritually comfortable with something) to honor the flag as a symbol. However, standing there with my hand over my heart but remaining silent until "liberty and justice for all," I started to think--how might I express what really matters to me? What would I say instead?

I came up with the following. (I wonder what other "alternative Pledges" folks have created?)

My pledge of allegiance )

OMG YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!111%^&?~^#...

Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price

If there is, was, or will be a Wal-Mart near you, you should see this movie.

If you're a U.S. citizen, you should see this movie.

If you form part of the global economy, you should see this movie.

Incoherent hyperbole aside... )

In which I drabble my way recklessly into another fandom...

Series: Hikaru no Go
Disclaimer: Ah, if only.
Author’s Note: My first Hikago ficcage. These drabbles cling pretty closely to the anime storyline. Literary concrit (as well as Go-accuracy-concrit) is earnestly desired.
Titles: Pre-Flight; Six and a half; Siege
Rating/ Category: K, introspective genfic with a hint of shounen-ai.
Characters/Pairings: Shinichiro Isumi and Yoshitaka Waya.
Summary: Isumi's back, Waya's off track. Three drabbles (each 100 words).
Warnings/Spoilers: For later episodes of anime (they're set just after Isumi comes back from his stay in China).

Purloined from the journals of [livejournal.com profile] gravenimaj and, I think, [livejournal.com profile] caitirin:

Go to MusicOutfitters.com. In the Search box, enter the year you graduated high school. The first item returned should be the 100 most popular songs from that year. Cut and paste them into your journal.

Bold the ones you like.
Underline your favorite.
Strike through the songs you loathe.
Gray out ones you totally don't remember

Way back when, [livejournal.com profile] fish_are_evil tagged me for the One-True-Pairing meme. I'm finally getting around to it. Deep down, I don't cling to "true pairings" for series; good writing ofen trumps pairing preference. Still, there *are* pairings I particularly like, so...

follow the yellow brick cut....  )
sarasusa: (Let Your Light Shine)
Title: Lächeln
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Rating: K
Category: General
Pairings: None in particular
Summary: Momiji makes use of his memories. 100-word drabble.
Spoilers: For Vol. 4 of the Fruits Basket manga.
Disclaimer: Natsuki Takaya created and owns Fruits Basket; this fanfic is merely a tribute to her work.

Probably everyone else came across this before me, but I just gotta trumpet it to the world:

POTTERPUFFS!

And here's a low-key Vampire Game story that I hope to post to ffdn at some point. Suggestions for improvement, especially from those familiar with the series, are humbly requested. ::cough [livejournal.com profile] cairnsy and [livejournal.com profile] misura cough::

Title: Ripples and reflections
Rating: K
Category: Angstlet (ze ficlet of angst)
Pairings: Shigure + Mayu; one-sided Mayu/Hatori.
Summary: Jellyfish have feelings too.
Spoilers: For Mayu's flashback in Vol. 10 of the manga.
Author’s Note: 100-word drabble with a goofy title. Ah well.

This could be the greatest lesson of Shigure's college years. )

I've fallen in love with this webcomic (found via the rich list of links on the website of [livejournal.com profile] bakashoujiki):

No Rest for the Wicked

It twines together various familiar fairytales in a smoky new blend--I have no idea what the outcome's going to be! The art (mostly in black and white and shades of gray) has a manga feel.

Aaaand it's the next stop on the Drabble Express: InuYasha!

Title: Sincere Regret

Mungojerry pics behind the cut. He's 9 years old; I adopted him from a family in my Quaker meeting that's decided to move South. (Since he hyperventilates even during short car rides, they figured a two-day trip would spell disaster.) The name (from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats) came with him, though his former caregivers didn't supply a Rumpleteazer.

Not as crafty as his name suggests... )

::looks around LJ grumpily::

How come nobody fills my requests on [livejournal.com profile] fic_on_demand? Are they *that* unpalatable?

::goes off muttering::

::pops head back in::

I meant to give a thoughtful, loving review of the Fruits Basket manga. Being that I have no energy, consider it recommended. I also recommend the 50 Rules for Teenagers manhwa by Na Ye-Ri, but prepare to be frustrated by the publisher's indefinite (and maybe infinite) delay in releasing Vol. 2. *heavy sigh*

::waves a tired goodnight::
sarasusa: (Apple)
Haven't updated in forever, but I've been keeping tabs on my f-list (even if I've barely commented anywhere...)

Brief job-crisis update: Philadelphia's City Council and Mayor, after haggling, got together a budget that restores a bunch of funds to the library. Now the question is--what will the library administration do? Will they have the sense to work on rebuilding morale, to seek input from their employees? My trust for them (probably most staff members' trust) is at rock-bottom. But at least I'm still employed...

::hastens to find wooden surface on which to knock::

I'm going to organize a tween & teen anime/manga discussion group at my branch. Haven't done the like before. In trying to get my act together, I came across two articles in the Voice of Youth Advocates magazine that I thought demanded sharing with you-uns--fellow fanficcers and suchlike. (VOYA is "a bimonthly journal addressing librarians, educators, and other professionals who work with young adults.")

"All Shapes of Hunger: Teenagers and Fanfiction" by Rebecca C. Moore

(...just love that HP fanart on the first page!...) The author has some intriguing reflections on what drives fanfiction, includes entertaining quotes from a few fics, and presents an "Insider's Guide to Fanfic Slang."

and

"The Anime-ted Library" by Kristin Fletcher-Spear and Kat Kan."

(Must confess I haven't read this article yet--but I've looked at the pretty Azumanga Daioh pictures... *_* )

More posts to come soon.

I think.
