1. Spring came late to the Land between the Mountains in the year of Gammage 885.
2. Alys de Renville was sitting on an old chest in the furthest corner of the loft.

4. Once upon a time, so long ago that I have quite forgotten the date, there lived a king and queen who had no children.
5. It was in late July of the year 1461 that the sun rose one morning red and fiery as if ushering in midsummer's hottest day.
