Meme the First: List the first sentences of ten of your favorite books. Have your friends guess which books they are!

1. Spring came late to the Land between the Mountains in the year of Gammage 885.

2. Alys de Renville was sitting on an old chest in the furthest corner of the loft.

3. "That slowpoke Sarah!" Henny cried.

4. Once upon a time, so long ago that I have quite forgotten the date, there lived a king and queen who had no children.

5. It was in late July of the year 1461 that the sun rose one morning red and fiery as if ushering in midsummer's hottest day.

6. I want to tell of our journey down the River.

7. One day my old friend, so dear to me that I call him "Uncle" Salim, said to me: "What a pity I can't write...."

8. The old shepherd sitting with his face turned seaward and his broad-bladed spear across his knees, seemed as much a part of the downs as did the wind-stunted whitethorn trees along the bank behind him: a little man, dark and knotted and tough as a furze root, with fine wrinkles round his eyes, under their jut of badger-grey brows, that told of a lifetime of looking into the distance in sun and wind and rain.

9. "Come home, Tenar!..."

10. Mrs. May lived in two rooms in Kate's parents' house in London; she was, I think, some kind of relation.

Hmm. I think the only one I know is number 9... (surprise, surprise!): The Tombs of Atuan (Le Guin). Though 6 sounds awfully familiar, and 4 makes me think of one of my favorite fairytales. ^^

X is an evil letter. But you did get more than I did, anyway...

Right you are! (Yep, for anyone who knows Earthsea, that was kind of a giveaway...) Your list was a major challenge for me, too. I will unveil the answers in a day or two.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you *had* read #6--it's from an *excellent* fantasy series written by a prolific author.
